Kids
Hundreds of young men and women throughout Pittsburgh have applied to be a part of this process. All young artists were considered based on their experience, artistic skills and dedication to the process of art. Of all the applicants, only a few dozen have been selected to be a part of this rewarding process. At the end of the process each student who commits to the thirty hours a week of work, and the four hours a week of class will be rewarded with a stipend. They will take home not only payment for hard work, but also a new set of skills, and a sense of worth in themselves and their communities. The goal is to show young men and women who are in a transitional phase in their lives – approaching high school graduation - the realities and benefits of work ethic and creativity. Pittsburgh is a wonderful city to be a working artist. The instructors involved with the kids are established and experienced educators who are providing artistic guidance while sharing with them their experiences as living, working artists. Some of the youth will go on to pursue higher education in the arts or consider careers in creative fields. The MLK Community Mural Project offers a rare opportunity to not only learn about Pittsburgh’s history, but also be a part of Pittsburgh’s history.
